Alright, so it is not uncommon for black-metallers to indulge in broadening their genre horizons by experimenting in varied side-projects. Darkthrone did it, Nachtmystium to a certain extent and here I've come across Chrome Division - a band which meddles around with rock n' roll and epic sing-along-choruses. I guess it's the, no offense, insipid/monotonous nature of black metal which might lead the unholy cohorts to pursue other creative ventures. With that being said, Chrome Division did an exceptional job at grabbing my interest right from the start. At first listen, they may come off as a Motorhead tribute band - 'Serial Killer' certainly opened in that manner. But it is my earnest advice for all you listeners is to take the music at face value. Shun whatever preconceived notions of heavy metal/rock n' roll you might have and enjoy the music for what it's worth - it's fun and extremely groovy.
Shagrath (from Dimmu Borgir) does a good job on with the groovy riffs and manages to make each song distinct; this, considering how much scope one has without making the band sound like a complete ripoff band within the confines of this particular genre. Some of the really good guitar riffs and leads can be found in '1st Regiment', 'Trouble With The Law' and 'We want more'. To be fair, the entire album is rife with well structured guitar lines. The aforementioned tunes are my select favorites. Moving on to the vocals, Eddie Guz fits in the Chrome Division sound perfectly. His grating voice would definitely appeal well to ol' school and new school fans alike. The beauty about each of this album's songs lies in the fact that there is not a single dull moment. There is either a catchy vocal line which makes you want to sing along. This moves on to a vocal breakdown (though overused in most of the songs) which will get you snapping your fingers. My stand out track from the album is 'The Angel Falls'. Very rarely does a song captivates you emotionally, this track does so from the very beginning. The memorable yet simple riff takes the song forward. It builds up to a crescendo and explodes into Chrome Division's typical song structure. Quite awesome to say the least.
Overall, 'Doomsday Rock n' Roll' is a thoroughly enjoyable album and is definitely worth checking out, especially for fans of heavy metal, rock n' roll and hard rock.
